Blackpool submits 'Vegas' proposals
Proposals to transform Blackpool's Golden Mile into a Las Vegas-style gaming destination have been formally submitted this week. Proposals by the public/private Blackpool Challenge Partnership forum aim to regenerate the strip with up to six resort-style casinos at an estimated cost of £1bn. Led by Trevor Hemmings' Leisure Parcs vehicle and London Clubs International, phase one proposes a £130m Egyptian-themed complex across 100,000sq ft, with extensive retail space and a 500-bed hotel. Tourism Minister Janet Anderson is 'delighted' to support the proposals, also backed by 71 per cent of locals: Blackpool is thriving, but ensuring it can keep attracting visitors is important. Plans however, are dependent on the anticipated relaxation of gaming laws, expected this June.
