Blackpool's Winter Gardens loses grant
A £1m annual grant to the Winter Gardens events venue in Blackpool has been withdrawn by the council owing to the 'disappointing state' of its facilities.
The council award was put in place in 1986 to help attract major conferences to the town in a bid to regenerate the local area, with 2007 attracting the Conservative Party's annual conference.
However, a review of the venue in summer 2008 revealed that it was not up to scratch and the council decided against renewing its annual subsidy from this October.
Instead, the council and Leisure Parcs, which owns the Winter Gardens, have agreed that subsidies will be made to the organisers of individual events being hosted at the Winter Grdens until March 2010 in order that the Victorian venue is maintained and that Blackpool remains able to host large conferences.
A council spokesman said: "We're on the record saying we're disappointed with the state of the Winter Gardens and this is a factor in changing how the subsidy is used."
