Blaenavon hotel set for new lease of life
An empty hotel in the centre of Blaenavon, Gwent, is set to be transformed into new four-star bed and breakfast accommodation as part of the Heads of the Valleys regeneration scheme.
The Lion Hotel restoration scheme, which is due to be completed ahead of the Ryder Cup golf competition in 2010, will include the creation of 11 en-suite rooms and a bar and restaurant, as well as a fitness suite. Acquired three years ago by a local businessman, the property is poised to become an important tourist facility and has been recognised by Torfaen County Borough Council, which will manage the restoration.
Leighton Andrews, the Welsh Assembly Government's deputy minister for regeneration, said: "This investment is of strategic importance to Blaenavon and supports the drive to develop the tourism potential of the Heads of the Valleys. "The investment will not only boost the local economy but also provide facilities that can be enjoyed by the local community."
