Boscombe surf one step closer
Europe’s first artificial surf reef is one step closer to realisation, following a meeting held earlier this month between Bournemouth Borough Council and the Marine and Fisheries Agency (MFA).
If the remaining issues holding back the council’s licence application are resolved, the proposed surf project will create a 120m manmade reef at Boscombe, near Bournemouth, in a bid to double the number of good wave days per annum available to surfers.
Head of leisure services, Roger Brown, said: “Meaningful progress was made during our meeting with the MFA. We are working hard to provide the Agency with the outstanding information needed and still hope to start construction this winter, subject to favourable weather conditions.
“I am confident that we can satisfactorily address the outstanding issues and that the surf reef project can then progress to enable Bournemouth the become one of the prime surfing destinations in the UK.”
Construction company Carillion has been nominated to develop the reef, according to a design by Kerry Black. Planning permission was granted in April 2005.
