Bristol Airport revamp plans submitted
Plans for the redevelopment of Bristol International Airport's (BIA) terminal building, which will enable it to handle up to 10 million passengers a year, have been submitted to North Somerset Council.
BIA's proposals including expanding the terminal to double its current size to accommodate additional check-in desks, security facilities and an enhanced departure lounge and arrivals area. A new public transport interchange and a multi-storey car park, as well as new walkways and air bridges providing direct access to aircraft, are also incorporated into the plans, which are designed to encourage economic growth while also addressing environmental concerns.
BIA has also announced plans to invest £9m for the development of public transport links and road improvements, including £1m to upgrade the A38 and £3m for schemes such as the Rapid Transit service to Bristol city centre. Robert Sinclair, BIA chief executive officer, said: "Over the last six months we have listened to a wide range of views relating to the development of the airport. We have paid particular attention to the views of the local community, who are most directly affected by these proposals.
"The application has been modified to address the key concerns raised. It now strikes the right balance between allowing the sustainable development of the airport to meet the long-term demand for air travel to and from this region, while also reducing and mitigating the environmental effects." It is expected that the proposed development would help to create more than 3,500 jobs, while also contributing up to £2bn for the regional economy.
