Britain’s hotel sector to grow
Britain’s hotel industry is set to expand by almost 8 per cent over the next two years, according to business advisory firm PKF.
PKF’s Hotel Britain 2007 report claims that the sector will gain a further 23,000 rooms during a two-year period, which would increase the nation’s total capacity to 320,000.
The growth will come primarily from the luxury and budget ends of the market, following on from the rise in branded budget hotel rooms in 2006, which comprised 80 per cent of the additional 3,600 rooms added that year.
The luxury segment is also set to expand, with new top-end hotels planned for London, Edinburgh and Glasgow in 2008/09.
Robert Barnard, hotel consultancy services partner, said: “Hotel customers are already benefiting from a broader range of rooms and that trend is set to continue. The extent of growth is making this an incredibly exciting time for the industry and the future is very bright.
“There is increasing competition in the UK hotel market, with hoteliers recognising the need to provide different levels of service and pricing. As competition intensifies, product differentiation is increasing in the limited service segment, with new brands ranging from luxury budget to functional and very affordable products. For the first time in many years, we’re seeing true innovation in the industry with the introduction of new hotel concepts.” Details: www.pkf.co.uk
