British Museum not expecting emergency grant
Following press reports of possible emergency grants of up to £15m for the British Museum, the government says the museum has made no application for funds and that the appropriate department has no procedure to provide them.
A Department of Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) spokesperson said the government is currently looking at the allocations for national museums and this process is likely to take around six weeks.
Cost-cutting has already meant that a third of the museum's galleries are closed for half a day on rotation and the opening hours of the Great Court have been cut back. In June, the museum had its first strike in 250 years.
A spokesperson for the British Museum says it is not expecting an emergency grant and can only wait for an allocation in line with all other national museums.
