Burnham confirms Manchester casino plans are scrapped
Culture secretary Andy Burnham has confirmed that plans to build a regional casino in Manchester have been scrapped.
Burnham said that the eight large and eight small casinos will go ahead, but that he did not “intend to authorise a regional casino”.
The question now remains whether or not Manchester City Council will try and take any legal action against the government.
Earlier today (26 February), the government released a report on the alternatives to supercasino-led regeneration.
After saying that it would be challenging for any alternatives to achieve the scale of economic benefits that could be secured through a regional casino, the report said that “once potential economic and social costs of a regional casino are included, and a package of alternative options considered, the difference can be reduced and even eliminated”.
