Business bosses warn of unrealistic targets
The Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce (ECC) has warned that it is unlikely that Scotland will achieve the tourism targets set by the Scottish Parliament.
The Scottish Parliament’s economy, energy and tourism committee launched an inquiry into tourism in December 2007, with the aim of ascertaining whether the target of increasing tourism revenue by 50 per cent by 2015 is unrealistic.
Separately, the Edinburgh Tourism Action Group launched its own action plan in December 2007, and announced a target of growing tourism in the city by 63 per cent by 2015.
According to the Scotsman, the ECC responded to the Parliament’s inquiry by stating that the targets were set as a result of political ambition rather than a factual analysis.
During the launch of the targets, the Scottish tourism minister, Jim Mather, said: “The Scottish Government is committed to supporting the tourism industry, increasing visitor numbers and positioning Scotland as a global leader in tourism.
“Only then can we ensure tourism fulfils its key role in helping to increase sustainable economic growth in Scotland."
