Busy Easter boosts Heathrow numbers
Heathrow and Edinburgh airports reported increases in passenger numbers during April.
According to the monthly figures from airport operator BAA, last month saw a 3.9 per cent increase in the number of people travelling through Edinburgh Airport compared with April 2008, while Heathrow reported a 2.6 per cent rise due to a busy Easter period. However, overall passenger numbers for BAA's seven British airports reported a 2.3 per cent decrease, following on from an 11.3 per cent drop during March. It now means that figures for the period between January and April 2009 are down by 8 per cent on last year.
Southampton was the worst affected, reporting a 13.4 per cent fall, while Stansted fared little better with a 12.6 per cent decrease. Glasgow and Aberdeen airports both also reported decreases of more than 10 per cent compared with April 2008.
