CPRE raises road sign concerns
The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has criticised the introduction of the government's new Road Safety Strategy, which could result in a million new road signs being placed in the countryside.
According to the CPRE, plans to encourage local authorities to introduce lower speed limits locally rather than implementing a blanket nationwide 50mph (80.5kmph) limit for countryside roads will result in the need for repeater signs placed every 300 yards. The CPRE is also critical that the new strategy does not include measures to improve the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders using minor rural roads, which is at odds with the campaign's bid to increase the number of walkers and cyclists as part of its vision for the countryside.
Ralph Smyth, CPRE's senior transport campaigner, said: "The government has not thought through the national costs and implications. Its piecemeal plans could require a million repeater speed limit signs that would deface the countryside and distract drivers."
