CTA to promote church tourism
The Churches Tourism Association has launched a new strategy – called Sacred Britain: Places of Worship and the Tourism Destination Experience -– to encourage more visitors to discover the rich heritage of Britain’s churches and places of worship.
The scheme aims to promote an authentic and rewarding visitor experience at places of worship; share best practice in welcoming visitors to churches; extend the scope of the project to all faiths; encourage more area-wide sacred heritage tourism partnerships and improve visitor information through tourism offices.
The three-year strategy is a partnership between The Churches Conservation Trust, VisitBritain, The Church Commissioners, English Heritage, The Civic Trust and representatives of churches and tourism interests at national and regional levels.
The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded a £50,000 Project Planning Grant to help identify suitable areas of the country where regional and area initiatives could take place across a range of faiths as well as to engage new audiences, improve access and train volunteers.
Tom Wright, chief executive of VisitBritain, said: “Britain's collection of historic cathedrals, churches and other places of worship are a unique and inseparable part of the country’s character and attractiveness to visitors.
“The Sacred Britain strategy sets out the way forward to deliver an innovative, coordinated and appealing approach to promoting this to potential visitors.” Details: www.churchestourismassociation.org.uk
