Calls for honesty on effects of terrorism
Michael Day, chief executive of Historic Royal Palaces (HRP), has called for UK tourism authorities and the government to be honest about the impact the London bombings have had on the tourism sector.
The plea comes as HRP, which operates the Tower of London and Kensington Palace, has seen visitor numbers fall by up to 30 per cent since the attrocities on 7 and 21 July.
“What we have seen since July is week-by-week falls against last year,” Day said.
“The week which ended 4 December was 25 per cent down on the same week last year.
“My plea is for everyone to be honest about the situation and to recognise that behaviour has not returned to normal.”
Day’s comments, made in an interview with the Financial Times, came on the same day as Visit London announced that visits to attractions were down but recovering strongly.
According to the agency’s latest London Attraction Monitor, average visitor numbers to attractions were down 5.2 per cent during October – but a great improvement on the 25 per cent decline recorded during August.
The first reports of economic recovery were produced by Visit London on 12 July.
