Camberwell benefits from Free Swimming grant
Camberwell Leisure Centre in Southwark will be revamped, thanks to a grant from the government’s Free Swimming Capital Modernisation Fund.
Southwark Council will match the £1.45m award from its own coffers to improve the outdated facility in a bid to boost participation in swimming among under 16’s and over 60’s in the area.
Work on revamping the swimming pool will begin this autumn.
A revamped gym area and a new customer entrance, changing rooms, café and crèche will be built at a later date.
The façade of the grade II-listed building will also be restored, if further funding is secured from English Heritage.
Cllr Lewis Robinson, executive member for culture, leisure and sport, said: “This funding will go a long way to making it possible to modernise the baths. It is going to go through a big transformation and I hope to see a lot more people come through its doors.
“The most important ‘Olympic legacy’ I can provide for the borough is to secure the long-term future of our facilities for the next generation — to make a lasting difference to people’s lives, by improving leisure and cultural infrastructure, increasing engagement in sports and cultural activities, and improving levels of health.”
