Cannons uses elite methods to motivate members
Cannons health clubs is to use techniques employed to motivate elite athletes to encourage its members to stick with their exercise regimes.
Goal setting, visualisation and even meditation are just some of the skills members will use to help them get active and stay active.
The chain has enlisted sports psychologist Craig Mahoney to produce a free guide which will help people apply elite sports psychology to achieve their exercise goals. The Psychology of Fitness, from Fitness Phobic to Exercise Evangelist gives advice on staying motivated and maintaining the momentum of new healthy lifestyles.
Its launch follows a survey of 1,000 adults across the UK commissioned by Cannons, which found that only 18 per cent of adults intended to take up exercise as part of their New Year’s resolutions.
The research also found that 35 per cent of people give up an exercise programme within three months of starting and a further 15 per cent (50 per cent in total) give up within a year.
The number one excuse for skipping exercise among active adults was lack of time (38 per cent) followed by being too tired (38 per cent) and bad weather (18 per cent).
These excuses and others are tackled in the guide, which provides people with a set of answers with which to challenge themselves when they feel their enthusiasm flagging.
The guide is available to be downloaded at www.fitnessphobia.co.uk
