Cardiff Airport unveils development plans
Cardiff Airport has announced plans to extend its main terminal building, which will link the departures and arrivals halls into one common area, as part of a bid to improve the facility.
The scheme, which was first put forward by airport bosses in March 2009, has now reached the planning stage and is expected to create new food and retail when the extension scheme is complete. Plans also include relocating the security control point for departures to the first floor, above the existing arrivals hall, and the redesign and landscaping of the approach areas in front of the terminal.
Cardiff Airport managing director Patrick Duffy said: "We are seeking to do this during a time where recession has hit air traffic hard therefore challenging any business case for investing in airport development. "Furthermore, the South Wales market is particularly challenging in terms of economic performance, which has a direct effect on our investment criteria."
It is hoped work can get underway in late 2010 on the extension, which is set to complement the refurbishment of the terminal's East Pier carried out last year, as well as the creation of a new, bilingual identity for the airport.
