Chelmsford Museums reopens
Chelmsford Museums in Essex has reopened its doors to the public following a £5m, 15-month redevelopment project.
The centre, which is owned and operated by Chelmsford Borough Council, has added a number of new exhibitions to its collections.
The museum now has four separate galleries. These are divided to cover four areas of interest - the story of Chelmsford; community life; the art collections; and natural history.
The Essex Regiment Museum on the second floor has also been refurbished, and new attractions include an exhibition on the 1842 Afghan War.
Chelmsford Borough Council's cabinet member for heritage Christopher Kingsley said: "It was great to be there as the doors re-opened following the building work to welcome so many visitors to the museum and hear their many positive comments on the new displays and building design.
"I hope that the museum continues to gain notoriety and go from strength to strength with more visitors and residents able to come and enjoy this new facility throughout the year."
Chelmsford Museum was founded in 1835 by the members of the Chelmsford Philosophical Society and first opened in 1835 in the governor's parlour in Chelmsford Gaol.
The museum was taken over by Chelmsford Borough Council in 1906 and in 1930 it moved to a Victorian house, Oaklands, which is still its home. Oaklands House was part of the Oaklands Estate - this is now a park with children's play area. In 1973 the Essex Regiment Museum also took up residence at Oaklands.
