Chester's historic Cathedral Quarter is set for a major £7.5m revamp as part of the local authority's efforts to establish the city as an international tourism and cultural destination.

Chester West and Chester Council's (CWCC) plans for first phase of work is centred around the city's medieval cathedral, which will incorporate a new entrance, a visitor centre, a terrace café and improved lighting and heating. Public realm work in St Werburgh Street will lead to the creation of a square linking the city centre with the area, a flexible stage in the cathedral's Nave will provide a new events space and viewing platforms are also planned.

The Dean of Chester, the Very Reverend Professor Gordon McPhate, said: "The cathedral is a fascinating and intriguing complex, making a significant contribution to the life of the city, spiritually, culturally and economically. "However, it is often said that it is hidden in full view and we want to improve its setting to allow greater appreciation and easier access to this wonderful complex."

Chester Cathedral is working with Chester Renaissance's Special Projects Team to co-ordinate the plans, which are due to be submitted to CWCC and the Cathedral Fabrics Committee for England in spring. If approved, work on the first phase is scheduled for completion in March 2012.
