China's top tourist attraction to get facelift
The Forbidden City, China, is to undergo a large scale urban facelift project, to protect ancient relics, and make Beijing a modern city with an ancient flavour.
The old city area which lies in the centre of Beijing, is home to over 295 designated relic sites, and is a major tourist hot spot. The renovations will be completed in time for the Olympics which take place in Beijing in 2008.
Mei Ninghua, director of the Beijing Cultural relics Bureau says 'The renovation of the old city area is as fundamental as the construction of the state-of-the-art stadiums designed for the 2008 Olympics.'
Beijing will invest US $6.6 billion between 2003 - 2007, in pollution control and ecological improvements, to guarantee its successful hosting of a 'Green Olympics'.
Mayor Liu Qi says. 'Over the next seven years, Beijing will tighten control of key pollutants and seek sustainable development. We will make the city greener by planting trees and grass on a large scale to accelerate natural ecological renewal.'
It plans to reduce energy consumption in the Olympic village and competition arenas with the use of low-pollution fuels, wind and solar energy to provide hot water, and the full use of natural lighting.
