The Commonwealth Games have been saved, at least for the time being, by some emergency funding from Sport England and the Government. The project, which has encountered some financial difficulties, particularly in the finding of sponsors, required further assistance amounting to £105m, to be made up by Sport England, the Government and Manchester City Council. The sum of £80m will be made immediately available, with a further £25m to act as a contingency fund. Sport England chair Trevor Brooking commented: Sport England has made a huge investment in the Commonwealth Games. We are committed to make the Games work. Sport England's total contirbution to the Games now amounts to approximately £165m.
