Concerns over tumultuous year ahead
The significant political changes taking place during the upcoming year could create uncertainty for business - including operators in the leisure sector.
According to Martin Broughton, the new president of Confederation of British Industry (CBI), the widely expected transition to a new prime minister could result in a political power struggle within the ruling Labour Party - which in turn would rejuvenate the Conservative Party into pursuing extra votes ahead of the next general election.
He said: “The coming year will herald a period of political change and manoeuvring, which must not hold back moves to improve the UK's international competitiveness.
“The relationship between business and politicians is critical as the coming year sees legislation vital to UK competitiveness - ranging from skills to energy security and the planning system - coming before Parliament. This must not be derailed by politicians campaigning for extra votes by taking a sideswipe at business, however unwitting.”
Brigid Simmonds, chief executive of Business in Sport and Leisure (BISL), agreed that a leadership contest could have a detrimental effect for initiatives being followed through at Whitehall.
She said: “If we have a leadership election in May, it may mean that not much is done in Parliament before the recess, which of course would slow up the legislative process. This is likely to be followed by a re-shuffle, so you will have new ministers trying to understand new briefs.”
Simmons also pointed out that political instability could have an effect on inbound tourism.
“Uncertainty is bad for business - it can effect the value of sterling too which in turn could be detrimental to tourists.”
