Congestion charge to extend to west
London mayor Ken Livingstone has announced the extension of the capital's Congestion Charge.
The new area to fall under the compulsory daily charge will be bordered by Chelsea Embankment in the south, Harrow Road in the north and Earl's Court Road in the west.
The new area will be added to the existing charge zone by the end of 2007.
Transport for London (TfL) also announced that it will be bringing forward the end of charging hours by 30 minutes – to 6pm – following demands for such a reduction from a number of London restaurants.
Eateries within the West End have claimed they have suffered a 5 per cent to 10 per cent drop in takings since the introduction of the congestion charge on 17 February 2003.
According to the London Chamber of Commerce, 78 per cent of the 212 restaurants it surveyed in June 2004 reported falls in customer numbers.
