Construction begins on John Hope Gateway
Construction work has begun on a new visitor facility at the West Gate of the Royal Botanic Garden (RBG) in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The John Hope Gateway, RBG's new biodiversity and information centre, will open in summer 2009 on the site of the former Botanics Shop.
The John Hope Gateway will offer visitors the opportunity to discover the world of plants and the scientific work of the Botanics through a set of interactive experiences and activities.
The Gateway will also provide a window on biodiversity in Scotland with a specially-designed Biodiversity Garden providing habitats for a variety of wildlife.
Other facilities at the centre will include a restaurant, improved retail space and education rooms.
The £15.7m centre has received funding from the Scottish Government (£10m), the Heritage Lottery Fund (£3.2m) and a number of companies, trusts and private individuals.
