Council completes waterfront building purchase
An "unpopular" waterfront property in Bournemouth, Dorset, is set to undergo a major transformation after the local council completed the acquisition of the site.
Bournemouth Borough Council (BBC) now intends to enter into talks with the building's three tenants - Sheridan Millennium, Sheridan FEC and Caskade Caterers - over its plans to develop a new entertainment venue. In January, the council confirmed plans to redevelop the "detested" property, which houses the Sheridan Millennium-operated IMAX theatre, after running out of patience with the site's previous owner.
Two other outlets - the Harbour Lights bar and restaurant and Coyote Ugly - will continue to trade as normal, but have already agreed terms with BBC to close when redevelopment plans move forward. BBC leader Stephen MacLoughlin said: "Although we now own the building, there is a long way to go before we can commence demolition. Until we have secured vacant possession, which is likely to take in excess of a year if we need to use our compulsory purchase powers, the public will unfortunately see very little happening on site.
"We have already said that we want to see a new facility which can accommodate an attraction or attractions for the public to enjoy whatever the weather. However, it will take time to decide exactly what that will be."
