Council denies theatre closure plans
Scarborough Borough Council (SBC) has refuted a local media report that it is planning to close the 2,015-seat Futurist Theatre as part of a £10m refurbishment of the town's South Bay and Spa complex.
The Yorkshire Post reported that the venue could be set to host its final summer in 2010 after a report by consultants Driver Jonas recommended that axing the theatre would offer the best option for the redevelopment scheme. SBC appointed Driver Jonas to produce a business case for all potential options for the South Bay and Spa project, and strongly denied claims that it had already made a final decision to close the Futurist.
Brian Bennett, SBC's head of tourism and culture, said: "The most important message to relay to everyone is that no decision has been made to close the Futurist Theatre; in fact the council has recently entered into a management contract up to the end of December 2009. "The option relating to the Futurist was therefore included for completeness and is simply one of a number of options. Full consultation on the options will take place over the next few months and I stress that at this early stage no decisions have been made."
