Council eyes Bournemouth IMAX lease
A compulsory purchase order for the remaining lease on the IMAX complex in Bournemouth is set to be submitted by the local council.
Bournemouth Borough Council (BBC) is proposing to transform the site into a new tourist destination for the Dorset resort, but needs an order to acquire the site from its current owner. A planning brief for the project has now been backed by councillors and will allow the council to move forward with efforts to secure the lease and press ahead with its plans.
The brief outlines a need for the site's developer to consider results from a public consultation, which favoured tropical gardens, a water park and an interactive arts, museum and entertainment venue. Any potential new attraction must also be commercially viable and improve the setting of the waterfront area, according to the brief, as well as a reduction of the building's height.
BBC leader Peter Charon said: "Our negotiations with the leaseholder of the IMAX unit continue and we remain optimistic that we can reach a settlement. "However, to make sure that we secure the lease so that we can achieve the residents' aspirations for the site, we are also progressing a compulsory purchase order."
