Council secures Weardale pool's future
Durham County Council (DCC) has announced that it will take over the running of a swimming pool at a Weardale college in order to safeguard the future of the facility for the local community.
The current lease on the pool at Wolsingham School and Community College expires in May, and there had been fears that the facility would be forced to close down as a result. However, DCC has agreed to take steps to ensure that the pool will remain open, and will now look at the long-term swimming needs of communities in Wolsingham and the surrounding areas.
Sheila Palmerley, from DCC's children and young people's service, said: "Our priority is to ensure swimming continues for the school and the local community. There is certainly no proposal to close the pool and our aspirations are to have maximum use of the facility on the school site after the lease expires."
