Council set to consider theatre's future
The operation of a historic theatre in Lowestoft, Suffolk, could be handed over to a local trust or private operator under plans due to be considered by Waveney District Council (WDC).
A report set to go before the council's cabinet on 11 February will reveal that Marina Theatre, which was first opened in 1870 and was rescued by WDC in 1985, poses a "serious risk" to the council's finances. Transferring the management of the theatre to a trust or private operator is just one option being discussed to help safeguard the council's leisure operational services, along with the disposal of Beccles Public Hall.
The WDC report said: "While the management options for the theatre could be similar to the remainder of the council's leisure portfolio, we are considering a stand alone option initially in order to fully explore this unique venue's option. "Once expressions of interest have been received, officers will be able to explore these in detail and an options report will be brought back through the Overview and Scrutiny Committee prior to the final decision being made."
