Council to mull Plymouth Pavilions proposals
Plymouth City Council (PCC) is to consider plans to market the Plymouth Pavilions site as part of its continuing efforts to provide an arena and ice rink in the city.
Cabinet members will be asked at a meeting on 29 March to approve a procurement process for a developer to acquire the freehold of the site and provide new leisure facilities. Plymouth Pavilions is run by Theatre Royal (Plymouth) and subsidised by PCC, although its leisure pool is due to close in late 2011 when Plymouth Life Centre opens.
The council admitted that it has received a number of expressions of interest for the site, and believes there would be a viable private sector solution. PCC cabinet member for finance, property, people and governance Ian Bowyer said: "Our discussions suggest there is a potential solution that would provide the continuation of arena and ice rink facilities for the city either at the Pavilions site or elsewhere in the city."
If approved, the procurement process could commence in May.
