Cox Architecture and Hassell have been appointed by the government of Queensland, Australia, to lead the design of the new Brisbane Stadium.

The venue will host the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2032 Olympics and Paralympic games, as well as the athletics events.

Located within Victoria Park, the stadium will also be the home of Aussie rules football (AFL) and cricket, while also being designed to host entertainment events.

The design team for the project will include Azusa Sekkei who designed the Tokyo National Stadium, while Arup and SBP will deliver the roof.

Blaklash will guide "meaningful and ongoing First Nations engagement" throughout the project.

Richard Coulson, chair of Cox Architecture, said: "The Stadium will be a catalyst for increasing the connectivity, useability and amenity of Victoria Park. It will have a critical role in 2032, but its life after the Games will be its most important legacy for the community."

Lucy O’Driscoll, managing principal of Hassell, said: "Brisbane Stadium will not only deliver a world-class experience for athletes and fans, but will also provide Brisbane with a vital piece of sporting infrastructure of true global calibre – a place all Queenslanders will be proud of."

The team will work with the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) to deliver the venue.

Cox and Hassell's are Australian-owned and Queensland-based architecture and design practices whose previous work includes the Optus Stadium in Perth, Australia, the Adelaide Cricket Ground Redevelopment and the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
