Culture continues to boost city's economy
Liverpool City Council (LCC) has announced that the former European City of Culture's economy was boosted by more than £33m last year as a result of hosting cultural events.
An independent study carried out by Vector Research on behalf of the local authority found that events held in Liverpool attracted 915,000 visitors, with expenditure worth £12 for every £1 invested by LCC. The figures compared with 1.5 million visitors in 2008 - Liverpool's year as European City of Culture, which was worth more than £40m to the city. The study for 2008 was carried out by BDRC.
However, the impact of cultural events held in Liverpool in 2009 compares favourably with figures released by the Mersey Partnership for 2007, which saw 215,000 visitors and an economic boost of £12.5m. LCC cabinet member for culture and tourism Wendy Simon said: "Last year for every pound we invested in culture events, the city's economy got more than £12 back. This demonstrates graphically the huge economic impact of cultural events.
"And it is perhaps not surprising that the Prime Minister has singled Liverpool out as an example of how economic success can be achieved through cultural-led tourism."
