Cut-price gym initiative launched
Young people in Manchester are being given the opportunity to take advantage of reduced gym membership and special activity session as part of a new pilot scheme launched by the city council.
Manchester Leisure, which is part of Manchester City Council (MCC), is working in partnership with the Department of Health and the Fitness Industry Association (FIA) to deliver the scheme through the Fit for the Future initiative. The initiative, which is open to people between the ages of 16 and 22-years-old, is one of five pilots taking place across the country and will enable participants to benefit from a full induction and an individual 12-week fitness programme in accordance with their existing fitness level.
Mike Amesbury, MCC's executive member for arts and leisure, said: "Fit for the Future offers young people across the city a chance to get fitter using a number of public and private leisure and fitness centres at a greatly reduced price. "Instead of the normal cost of up to £37.95 a month, those taking part in this scheme will pay only £5 a month, about the same as a take-away or a couple of drinks. And for that they'll be able to use some top class health and fitness facilities as well as benefiting from expert advice and special activities."
A total of 18 facilities across the city are participating in the initiative, which is also being piloted in Newcastle, Suffolk, Torbay and Bristol.
