DC Leisure launches Swim4Health initiative
DC Leisure has launched a new initiative to increase the awareness of the benefits of water-based exercise.
Swim4Health is a pilot project being rolled out across Amber Valley Borough Council in Derbyshire, and is supported by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) and Zoggs.
Swim4Health comprises a number of activities including aqua circuits, aqua jogging, Swim4Fitness, learn to swim and 'coach & stroke' drop in sessions.
Cathy Hinde, project co-ordinator of DC Leisure, said: "Swim4Health is an important milestone for our overall swimming development strategy. In the past, adult swimming provision has lacked the structured programming that is evident in children's swimming.
"We feel that adults also require a 'national plan for teaching swimming' so that they can access a range of aquatic health and fitness activities, as well as the option to improve their swimming ability."
As an extension of this initial project, DC Leisure has partnered with the ASA and a local GP from Belper, Derbyshire to develop an Aquatic GP referral programme.
Richard Cowley, group health and wellbeing manager of DC Leisure, said: "We are trialling a GP referral scheme that offers patients a free, six-week swimming activity programme.
"Whether you're recovering from an injury, a regular exerciser or just want to try something different, swimming has an array of health benefits. These range from weight management to cardiovascular fitness, enhanced posture to increased flexibility."
