DCMS to review offshore betting operators
New measures could be introduced by the government to enable British gambling companies to compete with their offshore counterparts, according to sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe.
Sutcliffe said that the DCMS will be working with the Gambling Commission to develop ways in which overseas licensed gambling companies could contribute towards regulatory and the Horserace Betting Levy, as well as the issue of problem gambling. The DCMS will consult with a number of experts, including the remote gambling industry, and the findings are expected to be reported back to parliament by the end of the year.
Sutcliffe said: "Technology has evolved at an incredible pace and online gambling has changed significantly since the Gambling Act was passed. Now is the right time to take stock of developments in Europe and elsewhere to make sure our regulatory system is as fair and robust as possible for all operators able to advertise their services in the UK."
