Derbyshire Dales leisure plans move forward
Plans for a new £12m leisure centre in Matlock, Derbyshire, have taken a step forward after Derbyshire Dales District Council (DDDC) confirmed it is seeking a contractor to build the new facility.
The council hopes that a contractor can be appointed by the autumn in order to allow work to get underway on the new Central Area Leisure Centre, which is to be situated on a brownfield site called The Dimple. Led by project managers Drivers Jonas, the new facility has been designed by Dyer Architects and is set to include an eight-lane, 25m swimming pool with moveable floor, two sports halls, a dance studio and a fitness suite, as well as a café.
Exterior features including BMX trails and a multi-use games area will also be created in addition to existing football pitches as part of the project, which remains on track despite local media reports that the scheme could be delayed due to falling land values. Drivers Jonas' Paul Denson said: "The interest in the project from the industry has been tremendous. The building will be set within a large, terraced brownfield site with ecological corridors being protected and retained as part of the eco-friendly approach being taken."
