Derry tourism strategy unveiled
A new Tourism Development Strategy and Action Plan, aimed at promoting Londonderry and its surrounding attractions, has been unveiled by Derry City Council.
By promoting the distinctiveness of the region to overseas visitors, the domestic market and the Republic of Ireland, it is estimated that by 2010 the strategy could boost visitor numbers by 25 per cent and visitor spending by 40 per cent.
Mayor Gerard Diver said: "The city can confidently contribute to Northern Ireland's targets to increase tourism from £1.9m to £2.5m in 2011.
"Over the next three years we aim to grow visitor numbers by 8 per cent per annum, sustain and grow the 3,500 full-time jobs supported by local tourism."
The strategy will build on the success of the Walled City Signature Project, which has resulted in improved visitor signage and information at attractions such as The Museum of Free Derry, The Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall, St Columb's Cathedral and The Guildhall, as well as the refurbishment of the Tower Museum and the installation of its new Armada in Ireland exhibition.
Statistics for 2008 already show that the number of holidaymakers from the Republic of Ireland to the area is up by 26 per cent, compared with the same period in 2007.
