Devastating year for tourism confirmed
Figures just released by the Office for National Statistics have confirmed expectations that inbound tourism suffered a huge drop in revenue last year.
The International Passenger Survey revealed that inbound tourism lost more than £2bn, with overseas visitor spending from January to December 2001 falling by 14 per cent compared to 2000 to £11bn.
The figures, which are in line with the British Tourist Authority's (BTA) expectations, reflect the impact of both the foot and mouth outbreak, and the aftermath of September 11.
Total visitor number to the UK was down by 17 per cent over the Christmas period, the greatest drop being tourists from the longer-staying and higher-spending long haul markets.
'Although not expected, these results prove that Britain's inbound tourism industry has been dealt a serious blow,' said BTA chief executive, Jeff Hamblin. 'We now need to draw much needed attention to Britain as a destination.'
