Devon cottages secure HLF funding boost
Historic cottage buildings in Newquay, Devon, which were turned into a museum of local history during the late 1970s, are set to be restored with the help of Lottery funding.
The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has confirmed a £170,000 grant towards work to revitalise Trenance Cottages, which were built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. New exhibitions will be installed exploring the history of Newquay and the story of the cottages themselves, while also providing new education facilities.
The cottages were formerly owned by Restormel Borough Council, which failed twice in its efforts to secure grant funding. The Friends of Trenance Cottages, however, secured the freehold in 2008. Ted O'Dell, the charity's project manager, said: "Getting the money from the Heritage Lottery Fund is the final piece of the jigsaw. We are confident we can see the scheme through, with parts of the cottages open by next summer and the rest by early 2012."
Nerys Watts, head of the HLF South West, added: "This restoration of the cottages and the creation of a heritage centre will mean more people will have the chance to learn about the fascinating history of the town."
