Down House wins tourism award
Members of the British Guild of Travel Writers have voted Charles Darwin's former home - Down House at Downe, near Orpington, Kent - as the best UK Tourism Project for 2009.
The English Heritage-managed house gained the award for a new exhibition and interpretation which opened in February to mark the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth. The exhibition traces his life and work and features rare original personal objects and manuscripts as well as a full-size reconstruction of the cabin which was his home for five years during his travels aboard HMS Beagle. Visitors can tour the house which includes Darwin's study, still full of his books, scientific instruments and personal items.
The house is surrounded by an 18-acre estate, said to look much as it would have done when Darwin used it as an 'outdoor laboratory' to test his theories on evolution. A handheld video tour of the garden enables visitors to learn about some of the experiments Darwin carried out there.
