ECA members call for 'insurance policy'
Members of the European Club Association (ECA) have called for the introduction of a new "insurance policy" to cover injuries sustained by players during international matches.
At the organisation's two-day assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, clubs requested that the EC take a "stronger" stance over issues relating to international football. The ECA, which now represents nearly 200 clubs across Europe, has called for UEFA and FIFA to address three issues, including insurance for players' injuries.
"Direct involvement" with how international fixtures are arranged and a new consultation process between clubs and countries over players' physical condition are also among the ECA's proposals. ECA chair Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: ""Everyone is so busy in securing additional dates for this or that competition and we forget that the players are often the same and they are stretched to the limit increasing the risk of injuries.
"A harmonised calendar and a clear insurance policy will be one of our main goals and this could help further to harmonize the relationship between club football and national team football."
