Edinburgh Zoo to downsize?
Edinburgh Zoo may have to downsize after plans to sell off land to raise money for a £72m upgrade were axed by the Scottish Government.
According to the BBC, the zoo’s plans to develop up to 120 homes on the edge of its Corstophine Hill site were rejected and it may not now be able to raise the £20m it expected to make from the sale.
David Windmill, chief executive of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, was quoted as saying that they would have to scale back the existing zoo if they could not raise the money.
However, he said that while the Scottish Government ruled out building homes on the top and bottom of the proposed area, it was not made clear whether the zoo could build in the middle.
Windmill told the BBC: “The reporter’s recommendations are not clear on the amount of land that we shall be able to develop. We will now work closely with city planning officials to determine exactly the area of land that can be developed for housing.
“On any reading of the report however, this area of land will be substantially less than we proposed, as will the corresponding capital sum released for reinvestment in Edinburgh Zoo. The result is likely to be a much smaller zoo, with the cost of upgrading the entire site seen as prohibitive.”
