Edinburgh slips as international conference host
A survey conducted by The Edinburgh Convention Bureau (ECB) has shown that the city is no longer attracting significant numbers of international conferences.
Scotland’s capital city slipped from ninth place in the world ranking of top international conference destinations in 2002 to 23rd place in 2005.
The survey found that Edinburgh’s limited infrastructure – lack of conference seats, hotels and direct flights – and limited government funding have had a negative impact on the city’s ability to compete with new contenders such as Barcelona, Dublin and Singapore.
The ECB now plans to prepare a strategy document recommending prioritising bids to attract conferences which complement Scottish Enterprise’s priority industries. Details: www.conventionedinburgh.com
