Edinburgh's Grassmarket to be transformed
A multi-million pound project to revamp Edinburgh's Grassmarket is set to be completed at the end of the month.
The scheme, part of the City of Edinburgh Council's Capital Streets Project, will result in a more pedestrian-friendly public space with opportunities for outdoor events, while historic features have also undergone renovation work. Work started on the project in 2007, and has included the refurbishment of the Covenanters' Memorial, which commemorates the lives of those who opposed the interference of Stuart kings in the Presbyterian Church of Scotland during the 17th century.
Plaques at the memorial have been repositioned, while improvement work has also been carried out on the Flodden Wall. Reclaimed setts have also been installed in cobbled areas around the events space. Plans for the refurbishment of the Grassmarket area were drawn up by urban design company, Gillespies, while the work was carried out by contractor RJ McLeod.
