Egypt cuts ties with Louvre over 'stolen' artefacts
Egypt has reportedly cut off all cooperation with the Louvre in Paris, France, until it the museum returns Pharaonic artefacts that the African country says are stolen.
Egypt's head of antiquities, Zahi Hawass, told the AFP news agency that the country has "made the decision to end cooperation with the Louvre until they return the works".
According to the AFP, Hawass said that the museum bought the artefacts in 1980, despite knowing that they were stolen.
He said: "The purchase of stolen steles is a sign that some museums are prepared to encourage the destruction and theft of Egyptian antiquities."
The Louvre is apparently looking into the possibility of returning the items, with an anonymous spokesperson being quoted by the AFP as saying: "The process of returning them has been engaged.
"But the decision is not for the museum to take because in order to return the works, we would need the agreement of the National Scientific Commission for the Museum Collections of France."
