English support for rugby's Olympic bid
A bid to include rugby union in the 2016 Olympic Games for the first time in nearly a century has received the backing of the England Rugby Sevens squad.
Rugby Sevens last featured in the 1924 Olympic Games, when USA defeated France in the final, and is one of a number of hopeful sports now vying for one of the two slots available at the 2016 Games. The England squad, which is currently in Dubai for the Rugby World Cup Sevens, has supported the venture, claiming that the sport's exposure would increase as a result.
Ben Ryan, the squad's head coach, said: "If sevens was given Olympic status, the sport would rocket – it would be on a completely different level. For the players, it would mean everything." Other sports that have made a case to the International Olympic Committee for inclusion in 2016 include golf, softball and roller sports.
