Environmental renewal for Scottish communities
The Scottish Executive is allocating £1.24m towards environmental renewal projects in 29 Scottish communities in the vicinity of quarry sites.
The RSPB Mersehead Reserve in Southwick will use its £80,000 to create a new community and learning facility.
Chris Rollie, RSPB Scotland’s Dumfries and Galloway area manager said: “Together with a Heritage Lottery Fund grant through the Sulwath Connections Area Landscape Project, we will transform an old farmhouse into an education and training centre with volunteer accommodation to give local school children and other groups the opportunity to learn more about the wonderful nature on their doorstep.”
A shore side footpath on Barra will also be established, improvements will be made to a nature reserve in Kirkintilloch and a new park, paths, plants and a picnic area will be developed in Finstown, Orkney.
The awards are part of the Executive’s Community Environmental Renewal Scheme (CERS) – administered by Forward Scotland – which supports projects aimed at the, restoring, protecting and promoting landscapes, habitats and local biodiversity, as well as built and cultural environments and community recreational amenities.
A further £510,000 will be allocated to more projects later this year.
