The Sleep Lab from luxury wellness brand, Equinox, is now taking bookings at the Equinox Hotel New York.

Designed in collaboration with sleep scientist and author, Dr Matthew Walker, The Sleep Lab uses technology and research-backed techniques to help guests get a rejuvenating sleep, as well as equipping them with tools and knowledge to take away. Four Premier King rooms have been fitted out.

Rooms are programmed in accordance with the guests’ sleep and wake-up times, with temperature, lighting, sound and ambiance adapting to night time and morning. Guests are eased into sleep with breathwork and soothed awake by curated soundscapes.

“Our mission is to empower guests with scientifically-backed insights into their sleep,” says Walker. “This isn't just about better sleep during your stay, it’s about equipping you with the tools to improve your long-term health and performance.”

“The Sleep Lab is not just an evolution of our commitment to sleep – it is the future of high-performance regeneration,” said Chris Norton, CEO of Equinox Hotels. “We've designed a first-of-its-kind experience that merges science and luxury, enabling our guests to achieve peak recovery and performance through optimised sleep.”

Features of the rooms include:

● Adaptive mattress technology: personalised temperature control that enables precise sleep-stage monitoring to optimise for comfort and quality sleep. Dual-zone settings accommodate individualised preferences for couples.

● Personalised sleep and wake automation: 30 minutes before sleep, the room transitions to the optimal sleep environment and 30-minutes before the wake-up time, the room eases the guest into wakefulness, with carefully curated soundscapes grounded in music psychology.

● Contrast therapy shower steam room: the shower can transform into a steam shower that utilises the therapeutic effects of heat to enhance blood circulation, promote detoxification, lower cortisol levels and reduce muscle tension to prepare the body for restorative sleep.

○ Ice Shower: water is set at 46-50°F (7-10°C) to reduce inflammation, enhance circulation and flush out metabolic waste by constricting blood vessels, which also promotes deeper, restorative sleep.

● Circadian colour meditation: a visually guided breathwork experience slows the heart rate and breath rate by following a pulsing red glow on the screen to help unwind before sleep.

● AM + PM soundscapes: a sensory ritual grounded in neuroscience and music psychology that supports natural wakefulness in the morning and sleep preparation in the evening.

● Sleep Lab AM & PM Rituals: The PM Ritual is designed to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and guiding the body into a restorative sleep state. The AM Ritual optimises natural wakefulness through precise movement, breathwork, light, sound, and temperature adjustments.

● Travel sleep kit: this includes research-backed tools for sleep enhancement while travelling, including a high-performance eye mask, a magnesium sleep patch and proprietary Equinox Hotels Sleep Tea.

● Sleep assessment: Guests can view their sleep stages and quality each morning from their bedside device and participate in the Dr Walker-led sleep studies.

Further add-ons are available such as spa treatments and an sleep-inducing food and beverage options.

Two research methodologies will be used to quantify the impact. The Within-Participant Study evaluates sleep improvements by comparing individual guest data under two different conditions. The Between-Participant Study analyses sleep performance across a diverse guest population between two conditions to refine and enhance programme efficacy.

Pricing starts at $1,700 (£1,252, €1,452) plus taxes per night for a minimum of two nights.
