Essex CCC stadium scheme put on hold
Plans for the redevelopment of Essex County Cricket Club's (ECCC) County Ground venue in Chelmsford have been delayed as a result of the forthcoming general election.
A decision on whether the major multi-million pound scheme, which was called in by the government last year, has been put on hold by the Department for Communities and Local Government. The communities secretary is now expected to determine the fate of the development on or before 10 June, with a complete overhaul of the stadium's cricketing facilities mooted, including a new pavilion.
New media facilities, conference suites and an increase in spectator capacity to around 7,500 seats are being planned, as well as a new club museum and library and a club shop. Cricketing improvements will form part of a wider mixed-use scheme, boasting residential apartments, 15,000sq ft (1,394sq m) of retail and leisure facilities and a public piazza area.
Chelmsford Borough Council is working in partnership with ECCC and MCD Developments on the project, which was originally granted conditional planning consent in September 2008.
