FCS scales back Glentress Forest scheme
Plans for the refurbishment of a former private residence as part of a new visitor centre development in Glentress Forest in the Scottish Borders have been dumped by the Forestry Commission of Scotland (FCS).
Jufrake House is now set to be demolished after the commission determined that converting the property as part of the multi-million pound Glentress Peel scheme did not present a cost-effective option. Proposed new facilities at the 12-acre (4.9-hectare) site, including a wildlife viewing point, a café, a bicycle shop and changing facilities, will now be housed entirely within new buildings, and the project remains on track to open in 2010.
Plans were first unveiled three years ago for the visitor centre development at the forest, which attracts around 300,000 mountain bikers and walkers each year, and FCS is funding the scheme along with contributions from sportscotland and Scottish Enterprise.
