'Father' of cv health passes away
Professor Jerry Morris, the first person to discovered the link between cardiovascular health and exercise, has died at the age of 99.
Born in Liverpool, Morris was heralded as one of the most significant figures in public health and in the history of British health care.
He made one of the most important discoveries in post-war health after studying the link between lack of exercise and ill-health.
His research in the 1940s and 50s demonstrated the link between exercise and cardiovascular health.
Believing that there may be some link between a person's occupation and their risk of having a heart attack, Morris compared the rates of heart attack among different professional groups. His seminal paper Coronary heart disease and physical activity of work was published in the Lancet in 1953.
Sir Liam Donaldson, chief medical officer, said: "Jerry Morris was a titan of 20th century public health.
"His work on preventing heart disease, on physical activity and health and, most of all, on health inequalities made a huge positive impact on our population's health.
"He will be remembered as a towering and inspirational figure whose tireless work for the health disadvantaged continued long into his nineties. His passing is a source of sadness but his life and his professional legacy is a cause for celebration."
